Recently the established pattern appears to be to going grocery shopping on Sundays. Grocery shopping tends to go one of three ways:
- We need groceries… I don’t have a list, but we are already out. I bet we can figure it out while in the store. *proceed to store* Meal prep for the week is a bit disorganized and I typically end up running out again to pick up something we missed or we change plans for a meal we can manage with items we already have on hand at home.
- We are at home… Asks Ben, “What would you like to have this week for dinner?” Proceed to ask questions until we finally end up with 3-4 dishes and then I fill in the list with weekly needs and restock items or household things we currently need. Proceed to store together. Meal prep for the week goes well. 🙂
- We are or just I am at home, and I proceed to make the grocery list alone. The list includes all the meals I will enjoy and at least one I believe Ben has been wanting. Proceed to store either with or without Ben. Meal prep for the week goes well.
My preference is always number 2. Oh and I like to reuse the blank side of envelopes to write my lists. My mother does this and I just like to think it’s my way of reusing before recycling. 🙂 How do you make your grocery list and plan for meals in your home?
Sweetly,
Gwenlynn
Gwen’s Mom (me) – I also like to use envelopes for grocery lists because I put my coupons to use right in the envelope.

I tend to forget my coupons… hmm I need to work on that.

Envelopes, iPhone Notes, tiny scraps of paper, no list at all, and make it up as I go. My husband is the exact opposite. He can’t live without Post-it notes, and he always buys the same things. Sometimes I wonder if we’re from the same planet!

We do all of our food shopping online but I am exactly like you, in that I use the back of used envelopes to write the shopping/grocery lists. I used to use actual paper but I now see the merit in using the back of envelopes, as they are so convenient and otherwise wasted material if I don’t use them for this purpose. At least household bills now serve some kind of useful purpose. Meal prep is always difficult though, I buy core stuff from the online shop but I still have to go to another shop to get bits I’ve missed or it I feel like eating something different to what I’ve originally bought. Most of the time I let expiry dates dictate what food we are eating unless we have nothing in the house but frozen food and I forget that it is there and go out to buy something to cook immediately 🙂
